Latest News ~ World Cup Campaign
You'll hopefully be starting to see and hear our latest No Excuses campaign
focussing on domestic abuse and the World Cup. During the last World Cup,
Birmingham police saw the highest level of reporting that they've seen on
any day for a decade. We all know that alcohol and football do not cause
domestic abuse, but they are often used by perpetrators as an excuse for
their violence.
For this World Cup, our police force, supported by Safer Birmingham Partnership, are dedicating extra resources to tackling domestic abuse. In some areas, they will be pro-actively targeting known offenders. In others they will targeting licensed premises, putting on additional patrols or increasing the forensic capacity to make sure that they can catch and convict offenders most effectively.
Our publicity campaign features:
- Roadside, city centre and supermarket poster sites across the city
- 200 radio spots with a concentration in the run up to England matches
- 8000 posters and beermats in pubs and licensed premises distributed by our local police
- Midlands Today coverage
- plasma screens in hospitals and GPs surgeries provided by Birmingham DAAT
- stickers for take-away boxes
- campaigning days organised by local consituencies, leafletting and raising awareness locally
Birmingham Women's Aid Helpline will be running 24/7 throughout the
campaign and is open to providing support and guidance to practitioners as
well as to the public.
