Employment
Recent research suggests that domestic violence has a significant impact upon employment. Women’s work may be affected by domestic violence in a number of ways:
- How safe is her workplace? Can the perpetrator harass or intimidate her at work? Is a change of job or location available temporarily and swiftly? All employers have responsibility for the health and safety of their workers.
- Does the employer have a workplace policy on domestic violence
- She may need some flexibility over her normal hours of work, for example, to attend legal or medical appointments, or because her normal childcare arrangements are no longer safe or disrupted.
- She may have to share personal information with a manager.
- Or work may be a haven for her from the abuse that she is experiencing and she may want no-one to know.
More and more employers are introducing employment policies around domestic violence to ensure that their employees receive appropriate support, information and flexibility. Many trade unions are also encouraging this development and can provide some level of support themselves, such as through access to hardship funds.
