Counselling
All of us need emotional support. Women who have experienced domestic violence need to be listened to with respect and without being judged, when they choose to talk about their experiences. Some women may benefit from more formal counselling particularly when physical safety and practical issues become less the concern. Counselling is not for everyone but if a woman decides it may be right for her she may find it will help her deal with the abuse she has experienced and build her self esteem.
Counselling in domestic violence is a specialist area and provided in Birmingham by Women’s Aid and Reducing Domestic Violence Project (Ashram) with Rape & Sexual Violence Project and Women’s Aid specialising in sexual abuse.
Birmingham Women’s Advice & Information Centre, WAITS and the Women’s Counselling and Psychotherapy Centre provide women only counselling services.
Stepping Stones provides group-work for survivors of domestic violence in the Yardley area.
Other forms of counselling and therapeutic services offered by Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Trust can be accessed via a G.P.
