Home Options
Housing is a key factor influencing women’s decisions to remain in or leave a violent relationship. For some women staying at home is not an option. If a woman who is being abused by the person she is living, with or is being threatened or intimidated by an ex partner, decides to leave home it is important that good advice is given about available housing options. Making decisions about housing can be difficult and women need to be aware of the range of options open to them.
Options that she may want to consider include:
- Temporary accommodation
- Staying at home
- Seeking re-housing by the City Council
- Seeking privately rented accommodation
- Buying her own home
- Moving to another area
Getting specialist, independent advice is key and available through Neighbourhood Offices, Shelter and Citizen’s Advice Bureaux as well as the domestic violence sector. In particular, a new service, Women’s Aid’s Domestic Violence Home Options Programme, will be able to give advice and assistance on all of the following housing issues.
- Finding refuge accommodation if appropriate
- Advising on property rights
- Support in taking out civil action
- Access to additional security measures to enable a woman to stay in her home safely
- Accessing the homeless pathway where needed
- Accessing the home lettings scheme
- Advising on benefits entitlement and debt advice
- Advice and assistance in accessing other services
