Money, Income & Benefits
Many women worry about how they will manage financially if they are thinking of leaving an abusive relationship. She may have been financially dependent on her partner and restricted access to money may have formed part of the abuse. Many abusive partners use money as a means of control and as an excuse for violence. A woman may be concerned about how she will manage if her abuser has never allowed her to have any money of her own but survivors may find themselves better off financially after their relationship ends.
She may have had to give up her job and have to claim state benefits for the first time in her life. This can be a daunting experience and she may need guidance through a complex system. If she has had to leave home quickly, she may not have access to any money now and may need immediate help to obtain some emergency resources. She will need advice on whether she can afford to keep her home or have enough to maintain her new home. She may be entitled to help with legal costs, moving costs and for replacement furniture. She can obtain specialist money advice from a Neighbourhood Office, Citizen’s Advice Bureau or from a domestic violence service to make sure that she maximises her income fully.
